Kia India is gearing up to launch the second-generation Kia Sonet in 2027, marking a major evolution for one of its most popular compact SUVs. Introduced in 2020 and updated in 2024, the Sonet has been a key model in Kia’s India portfolio. The upcoming version is expected to bring significant upgrades in design, technology and overall practicality.
A platform shift brings big changes
The next-gen Sonet will move to the new K1 platform, replacing the current K2 architecture. This is the same base used by the Kia Syros and supports advanced electrical and electronics systems. This shift will enable features like over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics. It could also address one of the current model’s biggest drawbacks: limited rear seat space. Improvements similar to those seen in the latest Hyundai Venue are expected, with better legroom and cabin comfort.
Familiar engines, hybrid on the horizon
Kia is likely to retain the existing engine lineup, including petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel options, ensuring continuity for buyers. However, the big update is a strong hybrid powertrain currently under development. While it will not be available at launch, it is expected to arrive around 2028 or 2029, aligning with the industry’s shift towards electrification.

Bigger tech and smarter safety
The new Sonet is expected to leap in terms of features. Larger 12.3-inch screens could replace the current displays, enhancing the in-cabin experience. Advanced driver assistance systems are also set for an upgrade, with Level 2 ADAS likely replacing the existing Level 1 setup. This would bring features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. Safety could see a boost as well, thanks to the new platform’s use of ultra-high-strength steel. Kia is expected to target a top safety rating under Bharat NCAP.

Ready to take on rivals
With these upgrades, the next-gen Sonet will aim to strengthen its position in a highly competitive segment against rivals like Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza and Mahindra XUV 3XO. Kia is reportedly targeting an annual production of around 85,000 units, signalling strong confidence in the model’s future demand.
