A crackdown led by La Liga against illegal streaming has unexpectedly disrupted access to legitimate platforms in Spain, including streams of the FIA World Endurance Championship. The issue has raised concerns among fans ahead of key events, including the anticipated appearance of Max Verstappen at the Nürburgring.
Mass IP blocking catches legitimate platforms
The disruption stems from aggressive IP blocking measures enabled by a court order. Authorities targeted servers linked to piracy, but the approach has gone beyond illegal platforms. Services sharing infrastructure, such as cloud networks, have also been affected. Providers like Cloudflare host multiple websites on shared IP ranges, meaning even legitimate platforms can be blocked if they overlap with flagged ones. As a result, WEC’s official streaming service became collateral damage despite no wrongdoing.
La Liga defends aggressive approach
From La Liga’s perspective, the hardline stance is necessary. The league estimates piracy costs clubs between 700 million and 800 million dollars annually. A 2025 study by Grant Thornton reported over 10.8 million illegal retransmissions of live events in 2024 alone. To counter this, La Liga has even introduced incentives, offering rewards for reporting illegal broadcasts in public venues.

Despite its intent, the execution has triggered widespread criticism. Legitimate websites are reportedly being blocked without notice, while VPN providers and digital rights observers have raised alarms.
