Pakistan’s hockey team finds itself battling problems far away from the field as frustration grows inside the national camp over unpaid dues and reduced allowances ahead of major international tournaments. Players preparing for the upcoming FIH Pro League and the FIH World Cup have openly expressed disappointment with the Pakistan Hockey Federation’s handling of finances, raising fresh questions about the state of the country’s once-proud hockey structure.

Players question federation promises

According to Times Now, the senior members of the squad approached federation officials seeking clarity regarding payments and allowances during the ongoing training camp. Several players were reportedly unhappy after learning that the daily allowance had been reduced sharply compared to previous camps.

The discontent does not end there. Players have also alleged that pending dues from earlier assignments remain unpaid despite repeated assurances from officials. Some members of the squad reportedly stated that similar promises had been made in the past but were never honoured.

The issue has created tension inside the camp at a time when Pakistan is attempting to rebuild its reputation in international hockey after years of decline.

World Cup build-up overshadowed by uncertainty

Pakistan is set to compete in the upcoming leg of the FIH Pro League against teams such as Belgium, Spain, England, and India before shifting focus to the FIH World Cup later this year. However, instead of discussions around tactics and preparation, financial uncertainty has dominated headlines surrounding the squad.

The situation has also sparked criticism over the federation’s administrative functioning. Questions are being raised about how players expected to compete at the highest level can remain mentally focused while worrying about basic payments and support systems.

The omission of captain Ammad Shakeel Butt from the announced squad further added to the unrest, with many within Pakistan’s hockey circles surprised by the decision.

Pakistan hockey’s larger crisis resurfaces

The latest episode reflects the larger struggles that have haunted Pakistan's hockey for years. Once considered a global powerhouse with multiple Olympic and World Cup triumphs, Pakistan’s decline has often been linked to poor administration, financial instability, and lack of long-term planning.

According to Times Now, ex-players and experts have repeatedly warned that neglecting athlete welfare would continue damaging the sport’s future. The current controversy has once again highlighted the gap between Pakistan’s hockey legacy and its present reality.
