A new WhatsApp feature that can help improve the quality of calls by eliminating the background noise while making voice or video calls is being tested. The feature known as “Noise Cancellation” is currently being tested on a small number of Android users using the beta version of the application.

The feature is designed to ensure clearer communication by filtering out ambient sounds such as traffic, wind, and surrounding chatter, allowing users’ voices to be heard more distinctly.

Real-time noise filtering during calls

The Noise Cancellation feature works through real-time audio processing. As soon as a user begins speaking during a call, the system identifies and suppresses background disturbances without affecting the clarity of the speaker’s voice.

The aim is to deliver a more consistent and distraction-free calling experience, especially in environments where external noise can interfere with communication. The feature ensures that only the user’s voice is prioritised, improving intelligibility for the person on the other end.

Users should note that while the feature enhances how their voice is transmitted, they will experience the same benefit on incoming audio only if the other caller also has the feature enabled.

Availability and user controls

Noise Cancellation, for those who have access to it, will show up in the call settings option. Typically, it is turned on by default, but users may disable it if they wish, or alternatively, activate it if it is already switched off.

In addition, users have the ability to enable or disable the feature even while they are in the middle of a call by clicking on the options visible in the call screen. As of now, the feature is only available for selected Android beta users.
