Instagram has begun rolling out a long-awaited feature that allows users to edit their comments after posting, ending the need to delete and retype messages to fix errors.

The update, confirmed on Thursday, brings the Meta-owned platform closer to other social media services that already offer post-editing tools. Until now, users had to remove comments entirely if they wanted to correct typos or change wording.

How the edit feature works

According to reports by Digital Trends and TechCrunch, users will have a 15-minute window after posting a comment to make changes.

Within this time frame, comments can be edited multiple times. Users can tap the “Edit” option under their comment, make the necessary changes, and save them. After 15 minutes, the edit option disappears.

Edited comments will display a small grey “Edited” label, though previous versions will not be visible to others.

Limits and rollout details

The feature currently applies only to text. While users can modify written content, images, GIFs, and stickers included in comments cannot be changed once posted.

The rollout is gradual, meaning not all users will have access immediately. Social media analyst Matt Navarra had earlier flagged the feature during testing phases before its wider release.

Aligning with broader platform trends

This makes Instagram similar to other social media platforms with the option to edit posts. For example, editing posts is already possible on another platform belonging to Meta called Threads, whereas messaging applications usually enable people to make corrections to their messages.
