Bajaj Auto has reduced the price of the Bajaj Dominar 400 by as much as Rs 37,000, with the updated model now priced at Rs 2.03 lakh ex-showroom. The new version, which has started reaching select dealerships, comes with a smaller 350cc engine instead of the earlier 400cc unit. This change allows the motorcycle to attract a lower GST rate of 18 percent, leading to a significant price reduction from the earlier Rs 2.40 lakh. Interestingly, despite the reduced engine capacity, the bike continues to carry the ‘400’ badge. This move is aimed at maintaining its market perception and avoiding any impact on buyer sentiment due to a lower displacement figure.

Engine changes and expected performance
While official specifications are yet to be announced, early details suggest that the new engine has a capacity of 349.13cc. It is expected to produce 40.4bhp and 33.2 N · m of torque. Compared to the previous version, this means a slight increase of around 1bhp, but a drop of about 2.8 N · m in torque. The change has reportedly been achieved by reducing the stroke length while keeping the bore unchanged. Apart from the engine, most other aspects of the motorcycle are expected to remain largely the same as before.

Market positioning and what to expect
Bajaj’s strategy mirrors a similar approach seen with new 350cc models from Triumph Motorcycles in India, where branding has been retained to maintain performance perception. The official launch announcement and full specifications of the updated Dominar 400 are still awaited. It also remains to be seen how the reduction in engine capacity will impact sales and buyer response in the competitive touring motorcycle segment.
