Apple is on to the next stage in artificial intelligence leadership. Amar Subramanya, an Indian-origin expert in the said field and former executive in pivotal positions at Google and Microsoft, joins Apple. He has joined Apple as Vice President, AI, and will report directly to Craig Federighi while also overseeing foundation models, machine learning research, and AI Safety and Evaluation, three key areas that will shape the next generation of Apple devices and services.

Who is Amar Subramanya?
Amar's journey began at Bangalore, where he pursued his Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical, Electronics, and Communications between 1997 and 2001 from Bangalore University. Even then, he was intrigued by how machines interpret speech, images, and language, thus starting his lifelong fascination with AI.
PhD and early research
He did his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Washington, working on semi-supervised learning and early multimodal AI to make machines process multiple types of data at once. His work got him the prestigious Microsoft Research Graduate Fellowship in 2007, and by the time he graduated with a PhD in 2009, he was an established researcher who could transform complex theory into practical applications.
Career highlights
As per a report by the Times of India, Amar started his professional journey as a software engineer at IBM, then joined Microsoft Research, working on speech and audio-visual AI models. Later, in 2009, he transitioned to Google, growing there from Staff Research Scientist to Vice President of Engineering for the development of Google's Gemini Assistant. He focused on natural language processing, multimodal systems, and turning advanced research into products used by millions.

In 2025, he was briefly the Corporate Vice President of AI at Microsoft, where he led efforts on foundation models and product integration. At Apple, Amar will be leading major initiatives in AI to ensure user-centric and trusted experiences across Apple products.
