A familiar face from one of the most vibrant eras in New York hockey has shared deeply personal news. Ron Duguay, the charismatic former Rangers forward known as much for his flair off the ice as his skill on it, has revealed that he is fighting Stage 4 cancer.

A difficult year-long battle

In an emotional conversation with Page Six, Ron Duguay, 68, disclosed that the cancer originated in his colon and that he has been battling the disease for more than a year. The fight has already taken a heavy toll. Duguay said he has lost both his appendix and gallbladder as part of the medical struggle.

“I find it extremely hard asking for funds for all these costs I’m going through,” Duguay said, speaking candidly about the physical and financial burden of treatment. He described cancer as something that “sucks the life out of you” and called the process “so freaking costly".

Family steps in with fundraiser

In response to the mounting expenses, Duguay’s daughters have created a GoFundMe page to help support their father’s ongoing treatment. In their message, they explained that the donations would go toward travel expenses, medical treatments, holistic care and potential new therapies that could aid in his recovery.

The family emphasised that the funds are intended to ease the strain of navigating advanced cancer care, which often involves specialised consultations, alternative therapies and significant travel.

An icon of Rangers history

Duguay remains a beloved figure among fans of the New York Rangers, having been part of the team’s colourful late-1970s and early-1980s era. Known for his flowing hair and energetic style of play, he became one of the franchise’s most recognisable personalities during his NHL career.

Now, the former forward faces a different kind of challenge, one far removed from the roar of Madison Square Garden.

Support from family, friends and fans may now prove as vital as any medicine in the fight ahead.
