Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Ganga Expressway, in Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday, marking a major milestone in the state’s infrastructure development. The project connects Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in the east, significantly improving road connectivity across the region. The expressway is built at an estimated cost of around ₹36,230 crore. It is one of India’s largest greenfield highway projects and the longest in the state.

Key features of the expressway

Stretching about 594 kilometre, the Ganga Expressway is a six-lane access-controlled highway, with provisions to expand it to eight lanes in the future. The high-speed corridor has been designed to support faster and smoother travel, with vehicles expected to cover the distance between Meerut and Prayagraj in nearly six hours.

The expressway passes through 12 districts, strengthening regional connectivity. It also includes modern infrastructure elements such as interchanges, service facilities and advanced safety features. One of its notable highlights is a 3.5-km emergency landing facility for aircraft in Shahjahanpur, adding strategic value to the project.

Travel time and connectivity boost

The new corridor is expected to reduce travel time between western and eastern Uttar Pradesh by almost half. What earlier took around 10–12 hours can now be completed in nearly six hours.

By linking key districts directly, the expressway is set to improve access to markets, cities and services, making transportation faster and more efficient for both passengers and goods.

Economic and development impact

The Ganga Expressway has been planned not just as a road project but as a broader development corridor. Officials say it will support industrial growth, logistics and agricultural movement across the state. The improved connectivity is also expected to attract investment and encourage development along the route, benefiting multiple sectors, including trade and tourism.

A major infrastructure milestone

With its scale, cost and design, the Ganga Expressway stands out as a key addition to Uttar Pradesh’s expanding expressway network. The project reflects a continued push towards faster connectivity and large-scale infrastructure development in the state.
