Heavy rain in North Bengal, but will Kolkata see any showers today?

Kolkata may see afternoon thunderstorms after a humid start, while South Bengal braces for gusty winds and North Bengal faces heavy to very heavy rainfall, says IMD.

Relief from the ongoing heat may be on the way, with the Alipore Meteorological Department indicating a chance of thunderstorms across parts of South Bengal on Sunday. Kolkata is also likely to see brief spells of rain later in the day, though the morning hours are expected to remain warm and uncomfortable.

Kolkata woke up to a partly cloudy sky on Sunday, offering little respite from the prevailing humidity. As the day progresses, sunshine is expected to intensify, making outdoor conditions uncomfortable for commuters and pedestrians.

According to the weather office, there is a slight chance of thunderstorms developing in the city after the afternoon hours. The minimum temperature has been recorded at 28.4 degrees Celsius, which is 1.7 degrees above normal. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 34.8 degrees Celsius, about 1.0 degrees below the seasonal average.

South Bengal: Thunderstorm activity across districts

The India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorm activity across all districts of South Bengal on Sunday. Rain accompanied by lightning is likely in several regions.

Districts including Purulia, Birbhum, Murshidabad, West Bardhaman, Jhargram, North 24 Parganas and Nadia are expected to see the most intense activity. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour may also accompany the storms, potentially affecting local conditions.

North Bengal: Heavy to very heavy rainfall warning

In North Bengal, the weather situation appears more intense. The meteorological department has already issued a rainfall alert, with heavy to very heavy showers expected in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar.

Other districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Cooch Behar may witness scattered heavy rainfall. Light to moderate rain, accompanied by lightning and wind speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour, is likely across the region.

Officials have indicated that the spell of rain in North Bengal is expected to continue for the time being, keeping conditions wet and unstable over the next few days.
