India are set to carefully manage Jasprit Bumrah’s workload during the upcoming Afghanistan series, with reports suggesting that the star fast bowler may feature in only one format. The Indian team management is reportedly considering resting Bumrah either from the one-off Test or the ODI series in order to keep him fresh after a long and demanding season. With India preparing for a packed international calendar, player fitness has become a key focus for the selectors and support staff.
Workload management remains a priority
Bumrah has been continuously involved in cricket across formats and is currently playing for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026. Following the end of the tournament, India is scheduled to host Afghanistan for a one-off Test in New Chandigarh from June 6 to 10, followed by a three-match ODI series later in the month.

According to reports, the management does not want to overburden the pace spearhead immediately after the IPL. Bumrah has previously dealt with injury concerns, and the selectors are now taking a cautious approach regarding his workload. Since the standalone Test is not part of the World Test Championship cycle, discussions are ongoing over where his presence would be more valuable.

Young pacers and all-rounders are expected to receive opportunities as the management looks to balance performance with fitness management. The team wants to ensure that senior players remain fully fit for bigger assignments later in the year.
Bumrah continues to be India’s most important fast bowler across formats, but the management appears determined to avoid unnecessary risks with his workload and long-term fitness.
