Few rivalries in Indian football match the emotion and intensity of the Kolkata Derby, but Sunday’s clash between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC could become one of the biggest matches in recent ISL history. With the Indian Super League 2025-26 title race entering its final stage, the two Kolkata giants will meet at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in a contest that may decide the championship.
Derby with title implications
Both teams enter the match on 22 points, though East Bengal sit on top due to goal difference. However, the head-to-head record is the primary tiebreaker this season, making the derby even more crucial. The winner will gain a major advantage in the race for the ISL trophy.
If East Bengal win, they will move to 25 points and strengthen their position before the final round of matches. Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, knows a victory would put them in control of the title race. A draw would keep the race open and give teams like Mumbai City FC and Jamshedpur FC hope of closing the gap. East Bengal head coach Oscar Bruzon said his side is approaching the game with belief rather than pressure.

Despite the tight title race, the ISL derby record strongly favours Mohun Bagan. The Mariners have won 9 of the 10 meetings between the two teams, with 1 ending in a draw. East Bengal are still searching for its first ISL derby victory.
