South Bengal is set to get some relief from the ongoing spell of intense heat, but not just yet. According to the Alipore Weather Department, uncomfortable and hot conditions will continue through Saturday. Several western districts remain under heatwave warning, with temperatures in Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum and West Bardhaman expected to touch or exceed 40C. Kolkata is also likely to see the mercury climb past 37C, accompanied by high humidity levels that may add to public discomfort.

Heavy rain forecast for North Bengal hills

While the south waits for relief, North Bengal is preparing for a wet spell. The weather office has issued a warning of heavy rainfall in the hilly districts starting Saturday. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar may receive between 70 and 110 mm of rainfall from Saturday to Monday. Along with steady rain, gusty winds ranging from 40 to 60 kmph and thunderstorms are expected in these areas.

Cyclonic circulation to shift weather pattern

Meteorologists have pointed to a developing system that is likely to change South Bengal’s weather from Sunday. “This change is due to the influence of a cyclonic circulation formed in northeastern Bangladesh and a trough line extending from there to Odisha.” This system is expected to intensify wind activity over the Bay of Bengal, with speeds reaching around 60 kmph on Sunday and Monday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.

Nor’wester to bring storms, gusty winds and possible hail

Thunderstorm activity is set to increase across South Bengal from Sunday onwards due to nor’wester conditions. Districts including East and West Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, Purulia and Bankura are likely to see stronger storm activity. Kolkata and surrounding regions may experience rain accompanied by gusty winds between 30 and 50 kmph and thunderstorms. There is also a chance of hailstorms in isolated pockets.

Storm activity likely till midweek

The weather department has indicated that this phase of thunderstorms and changing conditions may continue until Wednesday next week, offering a gradual respite from the prolonged heat spell across South Bengal.
