South Bengal is witnessing a steady temperature rise, adding to public discomfort as humid conditions persist across several districts. The Alipore Meteorological Department has indicated that while the heat will intensify over the next two days, a change in weather is expected from Sunday, with the possibility of rain and thunderstorms.

Clear skies and strong sunshine have pushed temperatures upward since Wednesday morning in Kolkata and nearby districts. The city recorded a minimum temperature of 28.2C, which is 2 degrees above normal, while the maximum stood at 35.6C. Rain is unlikely in the immediate days, keeping conditions hot and uneasy.

Districts such as Bankura, Purulia, West Bardhaman, Jhargram and West Medinipur may see temperatures touching 40C. In Panagarh and Kalaikunda, the mercury could climb close to 41C. The weather office has warned of possible heatwave conditions, especially during the afternoon hours. Residents have been advised to avoid stepping out between 12 noon and 4 PM unless necessary, and to stay hydrated.

Nor’wester likely to bring relief

Relief may arrive over the weekend as weather conditions shift. There is a strong chance of rain in South Bengal from Sunday, with Kolkata likely to experience a nor’wester. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds could bring temporary respite from the heat.

Wind speeds may reach 60 to 70 kmph in districts such as Bardhaman, Birbhum, Nadia and Bankura. Other parts of Gangetic South Bengal may also receive rainfall with winds of around 30 kmph.

Voting day weather may remain challenging

With the first phase of voting underway this week, both voters and polling personnel are expected to face challenging weather conditions. The peak afternoon heat could make long hours outdoors particularly difficult.

North Bengal to remain relatively pleasant

In contrast, North Bengal is likely to experience more comfortable weather. Rainfall activity is expected to increase from Saturday across Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar. These regions may also witness strong winds ranging between 50 and 60 kmph, offering relief from rising temperatures.
