Panic spread at the Gangasagar Mela site even before the festival officially began after a fire broke out on Friday, early morning. The blaze erupted in multiple temporary shelters set up along Road Number Two near the Kapilmuni Temple.

According to preliminary information, the fire occurred close to Bathing Gate Number 2, where several camps and temporary structures were being erected ahead of the mela. Most of these shelters were intended to accommodate government officials and journalists, including personnel from the Information and Cultural Affairs Department.

The temporary structures, made largely of hogla leaves, caught fire rapidly and were soon engulfed in flames. One after another, the shelters were destroyed as the fire spread quickly through the area.

The incident triggered panic in the early morning hours. On receiving information, multiple fire engines rushed to the spot. Firefighters worked for a considerable time before bringing the blaze under control.

No casualties have been reported so far. However, officials fear that the extent of damage could be significant. The fire brigade has initiated an investigation to determine whether the fire was caused by a short circuit or any other factor.

The incident has once again raised concerns over fire safety and preparedness at the Gangasagar Mela site ahead of the large gathering of pilgrims.
