Election Commission seeks report after BDO offices attacked during SIR hearings

The Election Commission has sought reports after attacks and vandalism at BDO offices in Murshidabad and North Dinajpur during SIR hearings.

Incidents of storming and attacking BDO offices occurred in Farakka in Murshidabad and Chakulia in North Dinajpur while the SIR hearing process was ongoing. On Wednesday, vandalism occurred at the BDO office in Farakka, Murshidabad, with allegations of chairs being hurled at the BDO. A similar incident was repeated on Thursday in Chakulia, North Dinajpur, where allegations arose of mayhem at the BDO office. The IC of Chakulia police station was injured during the incident.

Reports, damages, and arrests

According to BDO office sources regarding Thursday’s incident in Chakulia, government property worth a total of 20 lakh rupees was damaged due to vandalism, and numerous documents were destroyed. A complaint has been filed at the police station by the BDO office. Allegations suggest that some angry locals carried out vandalism because residents of that area were sent SIR hearing notices multiple times.

On the other hand, four people named Priyabrata Mandal, Emdadul Khan, Ranjit Chowdhury, and Alim Sheikh have been arrested in connection with the attack on the BDO office in Farakka, Murshidabad. Among those arrested, one holds the position of booth president of Trinamool’s Bewa-2 area, while the other three are known as Trinamool workers in the area. The hearing work at the BDO office started from 2 PM on Thursday.

Following both incidents, the Election Commission has sought reports from state police DG Rajiv Kumar and Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty. The Commission has also conveyed that if such incidents are repeated, they will not be tolerated in any way.
