Canada has revised key rules for the Post-Graduation Work Permit, tightening eligibility requirements and introducing a language test for most new applicants. These changes are very important for international students who want to stay in Canada and find work after finishing their studies.
What is the Post-Graduation Work Permit?
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit that allows qualified graduates to work for most employers in Canada. According to the Government of Canada, the PGWP is a program that aims to provide international students with Canadian work experience after completing their studies at an approved learning institution.
Who is eligible to apply?
However, simply graduating from a Designated Learning Institution does not qualify someone for the PGWP. To qualify, applicants must finish an eligible program at a designated DLI. Students must check their school and program against the list of approved DLIs before applying.
A significant change came into effect on November 1, 2024. Most applicants must now submit proof of an approved language test with their PGWP application. Applicants who submitted their application before this date, as well as flight school graduates, are exempt from this requirement.
How long is the permit valid?
The duration of the PGWP depends on three factors:
Level of study
Length of the study programme
Expiry date of the applicant’s passport
The permit is issued for whichever period ends first.
Special rules apply to master’s degree programs since February 15, 2024. For other programs, the work permit duration is usually the same as the duration of the completed studies.
Passport validity rule
The government states that the work permit is valid only until the expiry date of the passport. If the passport expires before the end of the eligible period of the PGWP, the graduates can apply for an extension after obtaining a new passport. To apply for an extension, you need to apply on paper once you have a new passport that includes the entire eligible period.
