Air India has cancelled multiple flights to and from New York and Newark as a powerful blizzard continues to disrupt travel across the United States East Coast. The airline announced the decision on Monday, citing safety concerns amid severe weather conditions affecting airport operations.
Flights cancelled due to blizzard conditions
In a post on X, Air India confirmed the cancellations, stating, "Airport operations at New York and Newark have been affected due to the blizzard, resulting in heavy snowfall. In view of the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew, Air India flights to and from New York and Newark have been cancelled on February 24.

The move follows similar cancellations a day earlier, when the airline suspended all flights on February 23 after forecasts warned of a severe winter storm expected to impact New York, New Jersey and nearby regions.
Massive winter storm hits US East Coast
The disruptions come as a major winter storm sweeps across the US East Coast. According to Bloomberg, more than 35 million people across New York City and coastal areas remain under blizzard warnings, with forecasts predicting heavy snowfall, strong winds and dangerous travel conditions.
Authorities warned residents to stay indoors as weather conditions worsened across several states.
Travel restrictions and closures in New York
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a travel ban beginning 9 pm local time on Sunday through Monday noon, restricting movement on streets, highways and bridges except for essential services. Public schools were also closed as parts of the city prepared for snowfall that could reach up to 28 inches, along with strong winds and possible coastal flooding.

Thousands of flights affected
The storm has severely impacted air travel nationwide. More than 7,500 flights were cancelled between Sunday afternoon and Tuesday due to extreme weather conditions. The majority of disruptions were reported in major hubs including New York, Boston, Newark and Philadelphia.
Airlines continue to monitor weather developments as operations remain dependent on improving conditions across the affected regions.
