Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed grief over the mass shooting in Canada that claimed 10 lives, including several at a high school in British Columbia. At least 10 people were killed and 25 others injured in a shooting at a school in British Columbia, authorities said. The attack took place on Tuesday afternoon at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in the Peace Region area. Several of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

In a post on X, PM Modi said he was “deeply shocked” by the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

“Deeply shocked by the horrendous shooting in Canada. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands in solidarity with the people of Canada in this moment of profound grief,” he wrote.

What happened in British Columbia?

The shooting took place at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia’s Peace region on Tuesday. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), six people were found dead inside the school premises. Another person died while being transported to the hospital.

Two individuals were airlifted to the hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, and another victim succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital. Around 25 others were assessed and treated for injuries at a local medical centre.

According to sources, the suspected attacker was shot dead by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Police said a woman with brown hair and brown clothing carried out the attack. Her body was recovered during the search operation.

Emergency response and investigation

Authorities issued an alert on the Public Incident Public Alert (PIPA), describing the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair.” The alert was later cancelled as they realised that there were no other suspects and no ongoing threat to the public.

As part of the initial response, officers entered the school to locate and neutralise the threat. During their search, they discovered multiple victims. “An individual believed to be the shooter was also found deceased with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury”, Hindustan Times cited a statement as saying.

Canadian PM Mark Carney calls shooting ‘tragic’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as “tragic” and expressed condolences to the families of those killed. He also conveyed his support to the residents of British Columbia during this difficult time.

“I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens. Our ability to come together in crisis is the best of our country — our empathy, our unity, and our compassion for each other.”, he wrote on X.
