Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran since 1989, is one of the most powerful figures in the Middle East. Alongside his political influence, Khamenei’s private life, especially his family, has attracted interest both within Iran and internationally. While he remains a highly public political figure, he and his family maintain a relatively private domestic life.

Married life with Mansoureh

Khamenei is married to Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, whom he met in 1964 and married the following year. Born in Mashhad in 1947 into a religious Persian family, Mansoureh has largely stayed out of the political spotlight, focusing on family duties and low-key social engagements. Her public appearances are rare, and she is respected for her modest lifestyle and commitment to religious traditions. Together, the couple has raised six children.

Six children

The couple have four sons and two daughters, each with varying degrees of involvement in religious or clerical life:

Mostafa Khamenei, the eldest son, engaged primarily in seminary studies and religious scholarship. He is married into another clerical family, strengthening traditional ties.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son, is widely viewed as influential behind the scenes and often discussed as a potential successor to his father. Although he does not hold an official government position, he is considered politically connected and deeply embedded in Iran’s clerical and security networks. He is married to the daughter of former Iranian parliament speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel.

Masoud Khamenei, another son involved in religious scholarship and the preservation of his father’s works. Like his brothers, he is married into prominent clerical families.

Meysam Khamenei, the youngest son, is also involved in religious and scholarly activities and tasked with publishing and archiving work related to his father.

Boshra Khamenei, one of Khamenei’s daughters, married into a family connected to religious institutions. Details about her personal activities are kept private.

Hoda Khamenei, the other daughter, similarly maintains a low public profile and is privately engaged with family responsibilities.

Family ties and privacy

The entire Khamenei family prefer to keep their private lives relatively under the radar compared to their public political roles. Several of the children’s marriages link them to other influential clerical families, reinforcing conservative networks within Iran’s religious elite. Though some, especially Mojtaba, are subjects of political speculation, most family members avoid frequent public appearances.

While Ayatollah Khamenei’s political decisions shape Iran’s domestic and foreign policy, details about his personal life reveal a family deeply rooted in clerical tradition and loyal to the country’s religious establishment. From his long marriage to Mansoureh to his six children’s roles both in private life and in the broader religious community, Khamenei’s family remains a quietly consequential part of Iran’s power structure.
