Iranian and US negotiators wrapped up the first round of high-level talks in Switzerland after roughly 18 hours of discussion, with mediators Pakistan and Qatar saying the two sides had made “encouraging progress” and agreed to a roadmap aimed at reaching a final deal within 60 days.

Iran’s top negotiators departed for Tehran while a team stayed behind for technical negotiations, underscoring that the process has moved from political signalling to the detailed phase of implementation.

The talks, held at the BĂĽrgenstock resort, were framed by a joint statement from Pakistan and Qatar that said the first session under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding had concluded in the presence of representatives from Iran, the United States and the two mediating countries.

The statement said the sides had agreed to a roadmap for a final deal within 60 days and that technical talks would continue for the rest of the week. In its live coverage, Hindustan Times quoted the mediators as saying that “technical talks will continue for the remainder of the week at the Burgenstock resort on all issues.”

Regional tempests meet diplomatic restraint

The discussions touched several sensitive regional flashpoints, including the war in Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz. Mediators Qatar and Pakistan hailed “encouraging progress” and said Iran and the United States had agreed to establish a “de-confliction cell” to address the Israeli war in Lebanon.

A senior US diplomat claimed progress on mechanisms to keep the Strait of Hormuz open for global energy shipments and to maintain a ceasefire in southern Lebanon.

Fine print, careful signals and cautious optimism

The joint statement outlined a communication line intended to prevent incidents and miscommunication in the Strait of Hormuz, along with a mechanism linked to Lebanon.

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi posted that “major progress” had been made and listed oil and petrochemical exports, the lifting of a blockade, the release of some frozen assets and a reconstruction plan among the issues addressed.

The joint statement released by Pakistan and Qatar, however, made no immediate reference to the release of Iranian assets.

The next phase now shifts to technical negotiations in Switzerland, where the mediators and the two sides are expected to work through the practical terms of the memorandum.

As of the latest updates, the US had not issued an immediate public comment on the joint statement, while Iran praised the mediators’ efforts.
