Britain’s political uncertainty deepened on Saturday after Prime Minister Keir Starmer was expected to resign on Monday and announce a timetable for his departure.
Starmer had concluded that his position was no longer tenable after talks with cabinet ministers, advisers, donors, and trade union leaders. A government source, however, said he remained focused on “getting on with the job of governing.”

The mutterings grow louder in Westminster
The pressure on Starmer has been building for months, but it intensified sharply on Friday after Andy Burnham won a parliamentary seat that would allow him to mount a formal leadership challenge.
More than 100 Labour lawmakers, roughly a quarter of the party’s elected representatives in the House of Commons, have publicly said they want Starmer to quit or at least set out a timetable for departure.
Reuters noted that it could not immediately verify some of the claims about a planned exit.
The captain refuses to leave the bridge
Starmer, who led Labour to a landslide victory in 2024, has faced growing discontent over scandals and policy reversals that have dented his standing with voters and inside his own party.
On Friday, he dismissed the idea of stepping aside and told reporters he would fight any challenge to his leadership. “If there is a contest ... Then yes, I will run, I will stand,” he said. He added, "I've said repeatedly I’m not going to walk away from that.”

Westminster studies its next move
Burnham is widely viewed within labor as the most likely successor, whether through a negotiated handover or a formal contest.
The former minister and current Greater Manchester mayor has not launched an immediate challenge, but his recent by-election win has altered the calculations in Westminster.
Starmer’s future now hangs on whether the pressure from lawmakers and party figures translates into an open leadership contest or whether he tries to hold on and fight the revolt from within.
