Moderate to heavy showers, along with thunderstorms, hit the city of Mumbai on Monday morning, bringing in a respite from the humid weather conditions, though at the cost of creating waterlogging and disrupting transport activities in various parts of the city.

The rains have come on the heels of forecasts made by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stating an increase in rain activities and predicting the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Mumbai by June 23. This monsoon season has been late in arriving this year, its advancement having stalled following its entry into South Konkan due to poor weather conditions.

It is reported by civic officials that some areas experienced intense showers in a short period of time.

The civic body said wind speeds could reach 30-40 kmph at isolated locations and advised residents to remain cautious during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorm activity.

The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad for the next three days, forecasting moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph.

Several areas record heavy rainfall

According to BMC data, the island city recorded an average rainfall of 17 mm between 6 am and 7 am, while the western suburbs received 10 mm during the same period.

Among the highest rainfall recordings, Savitribai Phule BMC School at Worli Naka received 61 mm in one hour, followed by Prabhadevi's G-South ward at 58 mm. Adarsh Nagar School in Worli and Malabar Hill recorded 44 mm each, while Worli Fire Station received 42 mm.

Monsoon arrival expected soon

The southwest monsoon usually hits Mumbai by June 10. But due to meteorological reasons, there was a delay in its arrival this year.

With increased rainfall and favorable weather conditions, the IMD believes that the southwest monsoon will move into Mumbai in the coming 24 hours.

People have been advised to monitor the weather updates and not venture out during rainfall and thunderstorms.
