Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day), which falls on January 19, is observed as one of 11 federal holidays in the United States. The day observed on the third Monday in January each year in the honour of Martin Luther King Jr, a prominent civil rights activist who was assassinated in 1968.

Martin Luther King Jr. also received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 in recognition of his efforts to eradicate segregation/racism within the United States.

Although King's actual birthdate was January 15, legislation made the third Monday of each January a federally recognised holiday in 1983, and it was first observed as such in 1986, according to Britannica. Events held on MLK Day include parades, marches and speeches from various political and civil rights leaders.

Here's a list of what's open and closed

Most of the schools will remain shut.

Bond markets, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ will be closed.

While ATMs and digital banks will remain operational, most of the banks will be shut.

All post offices will be shut and no mails will be delivered, with USPS Priority Mail being the only one to remain operational. FedEx will work on a modified schedule and UPS will stay shut, according to a report by Hindustan Times.

All public libraries will be closed.

Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) offices will remain non-operational.

If the scheduled pickup of trash falls on MLK Day, the pickup are likely to be delayed.

Most grocery stores, including Walmart, Target, Macy's and Costco will stay open. Several fast-food chains, including Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, McDonald's and other coffee shops and restaurants will also remain functional.
