The United States has officially decided to restore the name US Pacific Command (USPACOM), replacing the US Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM). The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Department of War, marking a return to the command's historic identity that existed for more than 70 years.
Established on January 1, 1947, by former US President Harry S. Truman, the command operated under the USPACOM designation for decades. It remains the oldest and largest of America's unified combatant commands.

“Restoring the legacy USPACOM designation honors the command's deep historical roots, fostering a sense of pride and collective spirit among all who serve in the Pacific,” the Department of War said.
Officials described the change as a restoration of tradition rather than a shift in strategy, emphasising the command's long military history and its role in shaping regional security arrangements after World War II.
