An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale hit Sulawesi island, part of Indonesia, early Tuesday morning, shaking the vicinity of Palu and raising concerns in an already seismically active part of the world.

The epicenter of the earthquake, according to National Center for Seismology, lay about 42 kilometers south-southeast of Palu at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake had struck at a point at 1.073 degrees South latitude and 120.263 degrees East longitude.

The aftermaths of the earthquake are currently being evaluated by officials, and there have been no casualty reports yet.

Authorities monitor situation after strong tremor

The shallow depth of the earthquake meant the shaking was likely felt across parts of Sulawesi. Local authorities and disaster management agencies continued monitoring the region for possible aftershocks and damage assessments.

Indonesia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly active seismic belt where multiple tectonic plates meet. The country experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity, making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. The latest tremor comes amid heightened seismic activity across Southeast Asia in recent weeks.

Earlier, a separate 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra Island. Authorities reported no immediate casualties or major damage from that event.

Region remains vulnerable to seismic activity

This is not the first time an earthquake of this magnitude has occurred in the country; there was a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that caused destruction just last week in the Philippines. The disaster resulted in tsunami warnings in several areas in the region.

Some have said that although most earthquakes do not cause any major damages, there can be instances where shallow and high-intensity quakes can affect buildings near the earthquake's epicenter.

The government of Indonesia will make additional statements on the earthquake in the coming hours after the relevant authorities collect data from Palu and other nearby areas.
