US President Donald Trump on Thursday claimed that a major breakthrough had been reached in efforts to end the conflict involving Iran, suggesting that a formal agreement could be signed as early as this weekend.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said, "We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran", indicating that negotiations had progressed significantly in recent days.

Strait of Hormuz may reopen after agreement

Trump said the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route, would reopen once the agreement is formally signed.

"The strait will officially open as soon as we sign, which could be soon, very soon, maybe over the weekend in Europe," he said.

The president added that he had been in touch with several leaders in the region as diplomatic efforts intensified. According to Trump, he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait. He also said he planned to speak with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Nuclear issue at the centre of negotiations

Trump said the proposed agreement addressed concerns surrounding Iran's nuclear programme, which he described as the central objective behind the recent military and diplomatic developments.

"Most importantly we have a deal that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon, which was the whole purpose of what we had to go through to get this. So it was a very big thing," he said.

Planned US strikes called off

Earlier on Thursday, Trump announced that new US military strikes on Iran had been cancelled after what he described as the approval of the "final points" of an initial peace agreement. He said further details regarding a signing ceremony would be announced soon.

Iran has not yet issued a formal response. However, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported that Tehran was likely to approve the agreement.

The latest development comes after months of claims from Trump that a deal with Iran was close. Since mid-March, he has repeatedly suggested that negotiations were nearing completion, while both sides continued exchanging strikes during the week, putting pressure on a ceasefire that had been announced in April.
