The long wait is over for football fans as the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off across North America. With the tournament expected to attract record viewership in India, one of the biggest questions among supporters has been whether they can watch the action without spending money on a streaming subscription.
The answer is yes, but with a catch. While comprehensive coverage remains behind a paywall, some of the biggest matches of the tournament will still be available to viewers free of cost through public broadcasting.
Zee takes charge of World Cup coverage
According to News 18, after months of uncertainty, Zee Entertainment secured the Indian media rights for the FIFA World Cup, ending speculation over where fans would be able to watch football's biggest event.
The agreement gives Zee exclusive television and digital rights not only for the current World Cup but also for several future FIFA competitions until 2034. To strengthen its sports portfolio, the broadcaster has launched dedicated sports channels under the Unite8 Sports banner.
For viewers who want access to every match, Zee5 remains the primary destination. The platform has introduced special World Cup subscription plans, allowing fans to stream the entire tournament live.

DD Sports offers a free alternative
According to News 18, not every football supporter, however, is willing to purchase a subscription package. Recognising the massive national interest in the tournament, DD Sports has stepped in to provide free access to selected marquee fixtures.
The public broadcaster will begin its World Cup coverage with the opening match and will continue to air the most important knockout-stage encounters later in the competition. This means viewers with access to DD Free Dish or DD Sports will still be able to follow the defining moments of the tournament without paying anything extra.
The arrangement ensures that football remains accessible to millions of households across the country, particularly in regions where paid sports subscriptions are less common.

Which matches can fans watch for free?
According to News 18, the list of free-to-air matches includes the opening fixture, all quarter-final encounters, both semi-finals and the final itself.
For casual viewers, these are arguably the matches that matter most. The knockout rounds typically feature the world's biggest footballing nations and highest-profile stars, making them the most-watched fixtures of every World Cup.
While dedicated fans may still prefer Zee's full coverage to follow every group-stage clash and emerging storyline, DD Sports offers an accessible route for viewers who simply want to witness the tournament's biggest drama unfold.
