Haiti’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 has drawn attention not only for its footballing achievement but also for a unique detail on the team’s jersey. The kit features elements of Poland’s red-and-white flag, prompting many fans to ask why a Caribbean nation would pay tribute to a European country on football’s biggest stage. The answer lies in a historic connection dating back more than 200 years.
A friendship forged during Haiti’s independence struggle
In the early 19th century, Haiti, then known as Saint-Domingue, was fighting for independence from French colonial rule. During the conflict, French ruler Napoleon Bonaparte sent thousands of soldiers, including troops from Poland, to help suppress the rebellion.

However, many Polish soldiers sympathised with the Haitian revolutionaries. Poland itself had lost its independence and was under foreign control, allowing the soldiers to relate to Haiti’s fight for freedom. Instead of supporting the French campaign, several Polish troops joined the Haitian cause.

Their decision played a role in Haiti’s successful struggle for independence, which culminated in 1804 when the nation became the world’s first Black republic and the first independent country in Latin America and the Caribbean.
A tribute that lives on
After Haiti gained independence, the contribution of the Polish soldiers was not forgotten. Haitian leaders recognised their support and allowed many of them to settle in the country. Some Polish communities remained in Haiti, creating a lasting cultural and historical link between the two nations.

More than two centuries later, Haiti has chosen to honour that bond through its World Cup 2026 jersey. The inclusion of Poland’s colours serves as a tribute to the Polish soldiers who stood alongside Haitian revolutionaries during one of the most important moments in the nation’s history.
While Poland will not be part of the World Cup 2026 field, its presence will still be felt through Haiti’s kit, which celebrates a unique friendship built on a shared struggle for independence and freedom.
