Indian travellers visiting Cambodia can now use Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for transactions, making the Southeast Asian nation the ninth country to accept India's popular digital payment system.
The development is expected to make travel more convenient for Indian tourists and business visitors, allowing them to make payments directly through supported UPI-enabled apps without relying heavily on cash or currency exchange.
UPI expands its global footprint
The expansion of UPI into Cambodia marks another milestone in India's efforts to take its digital payment infrastructure to international markets.

Over the past few years, UPI has gained recognition as one of the world's fastest-growing real-time payment systems. Its growing acceptance abroad reflects increasing confidence in India's fintech ecosystem and the demand for seamless cross-border payment solutions.
With Cambodia joining the network, Indian travellers now have access to UPI-based payments in nine countries, simplifying everyday expenses such as shopping, dining, and local transportation.
Boost for Indian tourists and businesses
The move is expected to benefit thousands of Indian tourists who visit Cambodia every year, particularly destinations such as Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh.
Instead of carrying large amounts of foreign currency, travellers will be able to make payments digitally through QR-code-based transactions at participating merchants.
Business travellers and entrepreneurs are also expected to benefit from faster and more secure payment options during their visits.
Strengthening digital cooperation
The expansion highlights the growing digital and economic cooperation between India and Cambodia.
As per NDTV, Indian authorities have been actively working with international partners to expand the reach of UPI, positioning it as a convenient payment option for Indians travelling overseas.
As more countries integrate the platform, experts believe UPI could emerge as a significant player in the global digital payments landscape.
India's digital payment success story
UPI has transformed the way millions of Indians conduct financial transactions, enabling instant money transfers and merchant payments through smartphones.
Its adoption beyond India's borders is increasingly being viewed as a success story for the country's digital public infrastructure. The addition of Cambodia further strengthens UPI's international presence and offers Indian travellers a more seamless payment experience abroad.
