Millions of people in Venezuela received earthquake alerts on their Android phones moments before powerful tremors struck the country, drawing attention to the growing role of technology in disaster warnings.

The alerts appeared only seconds before the strongest shaking began. Although the warning time was brief, experts cited by NDTV say even a few seconds can help people move to safer locations and reduce the risk of injuries.

Experts stressed that Google did not predict the earthquake.

"As widely perceived by many, it was not Google who predicted the occurrence of the earthquake, but rather detected the very beginning signs and sent out an alert well before the intense shaking began," Nikhar Arora, Director at BOTS.Ai by HR Anexi, was quoted as saying by NDTV.

How the system works

Google's Android Earthquake Alerts System uses motion sensors found in billions of smartphones. These sensors can detect tiny ground movements that occur during the early stages of an earthquake.

According to experts, Android devices act as a large sensor network. Their accelerometers identify primary seismic waves, known as P-waves, which travel faster than the stronger and more destructive S-waves.

"By recognising the same pattern in numerous devices, Google algorithms estimate the location and size of the earthquake and notify all people within the vicinity," Arora said.

The warning period may last only a few seconds, but those moments can allow people to move away from dangerous structures, stop hazardous activities or seek shelter.

Technology beyond earthquakes

Experts believe the significance of the Venezuela experience goes beyond earthquake detection.

"Although it is impossible to predict earthquakes, it is possible to use technology to detect them immediately and communicate the news as quickly as possible to prevent injuries and deaths," said Hrishit Panthry, Co-founder of Envirocare Foundation, per NDTV.

He said growing smartphone usage offers an effective way to deliver emergency information directly to people during disasters.

A new approach to disaster response

The Venezuela earthquake has highlighted how connected devices and real-time data networks are changing disaster management.

Experts say collaboration between governments, scientists and technology companies will play an important role in improving early warning systems.

While technology cannot prevent earthquakes, the alerts sent to millions of phones in Venezuela showed how a few seconds of advance warning can make a difference during emergencies.
