A devastating earthquake shook Japan. Tremors were felt in Japan's Shimane prefecture on Tuesday morning. The earthquake measured 5.8 on the Richter scale. However, no major damage or casualties have been reported so far. No tsunami warning has been issued either.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred in the eastern part of Shimane at around 10:30 AM local time. The epicenter was approximately 10 kilometers deep underground. On Japan's earthquake intensity scale of 1 to 7, its intensity was 5.
Although the earthquake's intensity was not very high, several houses swayed. Local residents of Shimane were terrified. Many immediately left their homes and came out onto the streets. The local administration of Shimane has announced that the situation is being monitored. At the same time, local residents have been advised to take necessary precautions.
It is noteworthy that an earthquake had also occurred in the coastal areas of Japan's eastern Noda region on the last day of last year. Its source was approximately 19.3 kilometers deep below the surface. A major earthquake had also struck Japan on December 12. That tremor measured 6.7.
Japan is located on four major tectonic plates on the western side of the Pacific Ring of Fire. As a result, it is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. At least 1,500 tremors occur there every year. However, most of these are mild tremors.
