Minority woman allegedly gang-raped, tied to tree in Bangladesh

On Saturday, the woman was rescued in a critically injured condition. She lives in the village with her 10-year-old son.

A minority woman has accused several men of gang-rape in Kaliganj sub-district of Jhenaidah, Bangladesh. According to the complaint filed at Kaliganj police station on Monday afternoon, the woman was allegedly tied to a tree while her hair was cut. The incident was also recorded and shared on social media. A resident of the woman’s village has been arrested in connection with the case.

Local sources said the woman lives in the village with her 10-year-old son, was rescued in a critically injured condition on Saturday night and admitted to the hospital. Her husband had died a few years ago.

Woman assaulted, tied, and filmed in Bangladesh

According to reports, two individuals visited her house on Saturday evening, initial report identifying them as relatives. Two neighbours reportedly entered the house forcibly to meet those relatives. The woman alleges that the two neighbours locked the supposed relatives in one room and took her to another room, where she was raped.

Afterwards, the accused allegedly brought the woman and the two relatives outside, tied them to a tree, and recorded a video. The two main accused have also been charged with cutting the woman’s hair and physically assaulting her. The victim claims that the accused had made indecent proposals to her previously.

Kaliganj police station Officer-in-Charge, Zellal Hossain, has confirmed that one person has been arrested and said a search is underway for the remaining suspects. He added that the filing of the complaint was delayed because the victim was hospitalised.

The incident has reignited concerns over law and order in Bangladesh and raised questions about the effectiveness of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
