Bangladesh Hindu man jumps into pond to escape mob, dies

A Hindu man in Bangladesh's Naogaon died after jumping into a pond to escape a mob accusing him of theft, adding to a growing series of violent attacks against minorities in the country.

In another incident of the death of a minority citizen in Bangladesh, a Hindu man in Naogaon passed away after jumping into a pond in a bid to save himself from a mob that was chasing him over an accusation of theft, Hindustan Times reported.

Death by drowning

The deceased has been identified as Mithun Sarkar. Naogaon Police Super (SP) Mohammad Tariqul Islam said, "He was chased by a mob accusing him of theft. He jumped into the water and after he jumped in, he died. The police were informed and they recovered his body with the help of the fire service. We are conducting a post-mortem and investigating the incident."

Since the death of Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, persistent attacks on minorities have been carried out in Bangladesh by religious extremists.

Hindus under attack in Bangladesh

On December 18, 2025, a Hindu man named Dipu Chandra Das was brutally lynched and his corpse set ablaze in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Extremists attacked him on charges of blasphemy, and the accusations were proven false. Within a few days, Amrit Mondal was lynched to death in Rajbari town's Pangsha upazila on December 24.

Khokon Chandra Das was hacked to death on January 3, and his corpse was set on fire. Last Sunday, a journalist named Rana Pratap Bairagi was gunned down after he was shot in the head in Jessore, Khulna. Within 24 hours of Bairagi's death, a shopkeeper named Sarat Chakraborty Mani was attacked with sharp weapons in Bangladesh's Narsingdi town. Chakraborty succumbed to the injuries on the way to a hospital.

The latest deaths add to a slew of targeted minority killings, which have been continuing ever since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted following the July Revolution in 2024.
