Devastating fire at Rohingya camp in Bangladesh's Cox’s Bazar reduces 25 homes to ashes

The fire started due to a phone charger explosion in the house of a camp resident, leading to an area-wide ignition of residences.

A devastating fire broke out at a Rohingya camp in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, on Sunday night, affecting multiple camps. According to sources, the fire originated at the 24th Rohingya camp in the Leda and Alikhali areas of Hnila Union before spreading to the 25th camp.

Teknaf Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Officer Jamin Mia said that three fire service units rushed to the spot after receiving information and began firefighting operations. No casualties have been reported so far.

Mohammad Alam, president of the Leda Camp Development Management Committee in Teknaf, said the fire started due to a phone charger explosion in the house of camp resident Fatema Akter. “The fire quickly spread in all directions. We are continuing efforts to extinguish the fire. The fire service is also working,” he said.

According to preliminary assessments by the fire service, more than 25 houses were damaged in the incident. Jamin Mia said officials are still assessing the extent of the damage.

Residents described scenes of panic inside the camp. Mohammad Amin, a resident of the Leda Rohingya camp, said, “Due to the intensity of the fire, camp residents are in panic.” Another resident, Syed Alam, said, “The fire service is working. We are also trying to extinguish the fire.”

Additional DIG Muhammad Kausar Sikdar, commanding officer of the 16th Armed Police Battalion (APBN), said the fire broke out in the area between the Alikhali and Leda Rohingya camps. “Everyone is working together to bring the fire under control,” he said, adding that the exact cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
