Israel has become the first country to recognise Somaliland as an independent nation.

With this development, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel plans to expand cooperation in the fields of agriculture, health, technology and economy. Somaliland president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, hailed the move as a "historic moment". In a statement, PM Netanyahu praised the Somaliland president's leadership and also invited him to pay a visit to Israel.

What this recognition means

The recognition by Israel is likely to encourage other countries to do the same thing, which will increase Somaliland's diplomatic credentials and its access to markets globally.

What is Somaliland?

Somaliland is a self-declared, unrecognised independent state located within the Horn of Africa region. Although it has operated without international recognition since 1991, it has developed its own economy, government, military and democratic elections.

With its very own president, Parliament and armed forces, it provides services to 5.7 million people.

In terms of its wildlife, Somaliland boasts diverse flora and fauna. With its bordering the Red Sea, it acts as a geopolitical player. Somaliland is also famous for historical sites like Taleh, Laas Gaal, the port of Berbera, the Independence Monument, the ancient site Zeila, Borama and Hargeisa.

Apart from this, there are several shopping hubs, flea markets and museums that display the richness of Somaliland.

Somaliland also offers very safe backpacking adventures in East Africa.

The Declaration

An Israeli statement informed that PM Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Somaliland president signed the joint declaration of mutual recognition.

According to a release by Abdullahi, it was stated that Somaliland is now going to join the Abraham Accords as a step towards creating a peaceful environment throughout the region and globe. He expressed his commitment towards developing cooperative relationships, increasing economic opportunities for all involved and facilitating sustained political and social stability in East Africa and the Middle East.

Decision draws flak

The declaration did not fit well with the foreign ministers of Egypt, Somalia, Djibouti and Turkey, who announced their "rejection".
