Iran has reportedly sent a fresh proposal to the United States aimed at easing tensions and addressing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, even as broader negotiations over its nuclear programme remain on hold.

Proposal routed through Pakistan

According to a report by Axios, the proposal was conveyed to Washington via Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator. The plan focuses on resolving the immediate crisis linked to the waterway and the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.

The White House has received the proposal, though there is no clarity yet on how the administration of Donald Trump will respond.

Three key focus areas

The reported proposal centres on three main elements. First, it seeks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments, whose closure has intensified energy concerns.

Second, it calls for extending the ceasefire or reaching a permanent end to hostilities between the two sides.

Third, it proposes delaying nuclear negotiations until after the waterway is reopened and restrictions on Iranian ports are lifted.

Responding to the report, White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said, "As the president has said, the United States holds the cards and will only make a deal that puts the American people first, never allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon," while declining to discuss details publicly.

Talks remain stalled

The development comes amid a pause in diplomatic engagement. Trump recently cancelled a planned visit by his envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner to Islamabad, citing travel time and lack of progress.

"I see no point in sending them on an 18-hour flight in the current situation. It's too long," Trump said, adding, "If they (Iran) want to talk, all they have to do is call."

Iran's Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has continued consultations, meeting Pakistan's Army chief Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He is now in Russia for talks with President Vladimir Putin.
