The possibility of major technology investment in West Bengal has come into focus after discussions between the Union government and representatives of Google in New Delhi. According to government sources, the government has urged Google to consider West Bengal for future expansion and investment projects in India.
The discussion took place on Friday during a meeting between Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and senior Google officials. Sources said the company expressed interest in expanding its business and investment footprint in India over the coming years.
Officials claimed the minister suggested that Google should also explore investment opportunities in West Bengal while planning future projects in the country.
Bengal investment push gains attention
The possibility of Google investing in West Bengal has drawn attention because employment generation and industrial growth have remained major political issues in the state for years. Despite repeated announcements of investment proposals at business summits, large-scale job creation has often remained limited on the ground.

A senior central government official said that a potential investment by a global technology company such as Google could be an important step for West Bengal's industrial ecosystem.
According to the official, "If a globally recognised company like Google invests in Bengal, it could encourage other international firms to consider the state for future projects as well."
Google plans bigger India expansion
Google CEO Sundar Pichai had earlier announced plans for major investments in India between 2026 and 2030. The company has spoken about investing nearly 15 billion US dollars in the country during that period.
Google is already working on multiple infrastructure and technology projects in India. The company recently announced plans to build a 'gigawatt-scale AI ecosystem' project in Visakhapatnam. The Andhra Pradesh government has reportedly allotted 600 acres of land for that project.

Government sources said Google is also exploring local manufacturing of servers and drones in India in the future. These issues were discussed during the meeting with Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Though the minister did not publicly disclose details of the talks, he shared photographs from the meeting on his X account. He later said Google is examining investment opportunities in India's AI infrastructure, as well as server and drone manufacturing sectors.
