After taking oath as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari changed his social media profile details on Saturday night. He updated his Facebook cover picture with an image from the oath-taking ceremony and changed his display picture to a photograph with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His social media biography was also changed to 'Chief Minister of West Bengal'.
The Chief Minister later travelled from Kolkata to his hometown in Contai after the swearing-in ceremony. Crowds gathered at several places along the route, including Ranihati, Panchla, Uluberia, and Kolaghat, to welcome him after the BJP's victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
BJP forms first government in West Bengal
The BJP formed its first government in West Bengal after defeating the All India Trinamool Congress in the Assembly elections. The party ended Trinamool's 15-year rule in the state with a decisive victory in the May 4 results.

Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister earlier on Saturday. During his journey back home, he stopped at different locations and interacted with supporters gathered on the roadside.
Mamata Banerjee government's term ended on May 7
Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not resign immediately after the election results. According to constitutional provisions, the term of her government continued until May 7.

Later that night, Governor R. N. Ravi issued the notification dissolving the 17th West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
