At least 96 people lost their lives after dust storms, heavy rain and lightning swept through parts of northern India late Wednesday, causing widespread damage and disruption, per a report by Hindustan Times. Officials said more than 50 others were injured as severe weather conditions affected several districts in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state.

Authorities said many deaths were linked to falling trees, lightning strikes and collapsing structures as strong winds moved across the region.

Widespread damage in several districts

Emergency response teams and police personnel were deployed in affected areas after roads and Railway tracks were blocked by uprooted trees and debris. Officials used cranes and chainsaws to clear major routes and restore movement.

Administrative official Narendra N. Srivastava said damage was reported across homes, agricultural land and power infrastructure, with rural areas facing the worst impact, per HT report.

Storm activity of this kind is common in northern India during the period between March and June, just before the arrival of the annual monsoon season.

Residents recount terrifying moments

People in several districts described scenes of panic as weather conditions changed rapidly.

In Prayagraj, resident Ram Kishore recalled how the storm intensified within minutes.

“The storm came suddenly and the sky turned completely dark within minutes,” Ram Kishore was quoted as saying by HT. “Tin roofs were flying and people ran indoors. We could hear trees falling throughout the evening.”

In neighbouring Bhadohi district, Savitri Devi said her family managed to escape moments before their home suffered damage.

“We rushed outside when the walls started shaking because of the wind. Our roof collapsed moments later. We spent the night at a relative’s house," she told HT.

Relief efforts underway

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to complete relief operations within 24 hours.

Authorities have also been instructed to provide compensation and emergency assistance to families affected by the severe weather.
