VD Satheesan is set to become the next Chief Minister of Kerala after the Congress on Thursday, May 14, formally announced his name following days of consultations and internal discussions.

The decision comes nearly 10 days after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) returned to power in Kerala, ending a decade of Left rule in the state.

Since the election results were declared on May 4, political attention had shifted to Congress’ choice for the chief minister's post. While other states moved quickly to form governments and announce leadership, the delay in Kerala led to speculation and growing curiosity.

High-level meetings led to final decision

The party leadership held multiple rounds of discussions before arriving at a decision. Several Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) leaders and former state unit chiefs met with the party’s central leadership in Delhi to discuss the issue.

Satheesan emerged as one of the leading contenders for the top post. Other names in contention included KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala.

With the announcement now made, Congress is expected to move ahead with the process of government formation in the state.
