Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee made a striking appearance at the Calcutta High Court on Thursday, arriving in a lawyer's attire as she prepared to appear in connection with a post-poll violence case linked to the Trinamool Congress.

According to sources, Banerjee is expected to plead in a case involving allegations of post-poll violence, per a report by The Indian Express.

Petition before High Court draws attention

The petition was filed by Shirshanya Bandopadhyay and concerns alleged incidents of violence after elections, including attacks on party offices and claims that workers had been displaced from certain areas.

This is not the first time Banerjee has appeared in court as a lawyer. Earlier this year in April, she appeared before a Supreme Court Bench challenging the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

During those proceedings, Banerjee argued that the Election Commission was "targeting" Bengal ahead of Assembly elections.

A law graduate with courtroom experience

Banerjee completed her law degree from Jogesh Chandra College of Law in 1982, at a time when she was actively involved in student politics through the Chhatra Parishad.

She joined the Youth Congress in 1983 and soon found herself handling legal matters linked to political protests, per a report by The Indian Express.

One of her early courtroom appearances came in 1984 during unrest in Kumarganj in Dakshin Dinajpur. When Youth Congress workers were detained, Banerjee appeared in court seeking bail for them.

Over the years, Banerjee returned to court in several high-profile matters, including cases linked to the July 21, 1993 protest violence, political arrests and police firing incidents in West Bengal. Her latest appearance adds another chapter to her long, lesser-known legal journey.
