The prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) have again gone up in Mumbai and the surrounding areas following the announcement by Mahanagar Gas Ltd., MGL, regarding an increase in its prices.
Mahanagar Gas Ltd., MGL, has raised the price of CNG by ₹2 per kg and thus the new price comes out to be ₹84 per kg compared to the previous price of ₹82 per kg.
According to MGL, the revision comes amid rising input costs and volatile market conditions. Officials also cited the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has disrupted global energy markets and pushed up fuel procurement expenses.
Auto unions demand fare hike
The latest increase is expected to impact thousands of auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers who depend on CNG for daily operations.
Soon after the revised rates came into effect, auto-rickshaw unions demanded an increase in the base fare, arguing that repeated fuel price hikes were affecting drivers’ earnings.
Union representatives have sought at least a ₹1 increase in the minimum auto-rickshaw fare and urged authorities to take an early decision.

Transport operators warned that if fuel prices continue to rise, commuters may eventually have to bear the burden through higher fares.
West Asia tensions affecting fuel costs
Industry officials said the geopolitical situation in West Asia has played a major role in increasing fuel procurement costs globally.
The continuing uncertainty in energy supply chains has already led to price fluctuations in several fuel segments, including CNG and LPG, across different parts of the country.
