The new moon, known as Amavasya, is considered a deeply significant phase in spiritual traditions. It is often associated with renewal, inner stillness and unseen cosmic influence. Speaking to News Ei Samay, Aathman Awareness Centre founder HH Saint Sundar explains how this phase holds a unique connection with human consciousness.
Amavasya is widely regarded as an auspicious time to begin new ventures and life decisions. “New moon day signifies new beginnings,” HH Saint Sundar says. The waxing phase that follows is believed to represent steady growth and expansion, both in personal and professional aspects of life.
He adds, “All important functions and new ventures are started on this day because it reflects the energy of growth that follows.”
Cosmic influence on the mind
Highlighting the unseen forces at play, HH Saint Sundar explains, “On the new moon day, the cosmic power of attraction between the earth and moon will be extremely high.”

According to him, this heightened pull has a direct impact on human emotions and mental balance. “The waxing and waning phases of the moon have a huge impact on people’s minds,” he says, pointing to the deep connection between lunar cycles and human behaviour.

A powerful time for spiritual practice
Amavasya is considered especially beneficial for meditation and spiritual practices. “On normal days, seekers have to strive to move their inner energy upwards,” he explains. “But on new moon days, this can happen effortlessly.”
Describing it as a supportive phase for spiritual growth, he says, “The transition becomes seamless, making it a boon for yogis and spiritual seekers.”
He further adds, “The existence vibrates in higher frequencies on this day, which is why many spiritual practices and rituals are performed to receive greater benefits.”
Honouring ancestors and traditions
Amavasya also holds importance in remembering and honouring ancestors. Rituals and offerings are performed with deep belief and devotion.
“On this day, ancestors are believed to visit and bless their successors,” HH Saint Sundar explains. “When we pray and offer them respect, they become satisfied and relieve us from suffering.”

Places like Varanasi, Gaya and Badrinath are known for such observances, where devotees gather to perform these rituals.
In South India, certain temples are associated with spiritual healing practices on Amavasya. Devotees visit places like Yoga Narasimha Swamy Temple and Prasanna Venkatachalapathy Temple with the belief that prayers and rituals can bring relief from mental distress.

The story of Abirami Pattar
The spiritual significance of Amavasya is also reflected in the story of Abirami Pattar from Thirukadaiyur.
Lost in deep meditation, he once referred to a new moon day as a full moon. “Today is Poornima,” he said, immersed in divine experience. Questioned by Serfoji I and faced with punishment, he turned to devotion.
Undeterred, he began singing verses in praise of Goddess Abirami. As the story goes, during his recitation, the Goddess illuminated the sky, turning the night into one resembling a full moon. This divine moment led to the composition of Abirami Anthaathi, a revered devotional work.
A day of spiritual possibility
Among all new moon days, Mahalaya Amavasya holds special importance. Rituals such as holy dips and prayers are performed in places like Rameshwaram and along the sacred Ganges River.
