Rathindra Bose was elected unopposed to the position of Speaker of the 18th West Bengal Assembly on Friday, making him the first Member of the Legislative Assembly from North Bengal to occupy such a prestigious constitutional post in the state since its independence.

The BJP member from Cooch Behar was elected by voice vote in the Assembly after his nomination was put forward in the House by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Bose was unanimously elected Speaker after all 207 BJP members voted for his candidacy, while the Trinamool Congress, which is in the opposition, did not have any candidate to challenge him.

First MLA from North Bengal to become Speaker

Bose’s appointment is being seen as a historic moment for North Bengal politics. No MLA from the region has previously occupied the Speaker’s chair in the West Bengal Assembly since Independence.

Political observers believe the move carries symbolic importance for the BJP, especially as North Bengal has emerged as one of the party’s strongest electoral bases over the past decade.

His election is also being interpreted as a political message aimed at reinforcing the government’s focus on the region’s representation within the state’s power structure.

Chartered accountant turned legislator

A chartered accountant by profession, Bose entered the Assembly after winning from the Cooch Behar constituency in the recent election. He defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Avijit De Bhowmik by a margin of 23,284 votes.

Congratulating Bose after the announcement, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the newly elected Speaker brings both administrative understanding and organisational experience to the role.

Bose’s elevation also marks a departure from Bengal’s long-standing political tradition, where the Speaker’s post was often occupied by lawyers or leaders with legal backgrounds.

During the previous Trinamool Congress government, veteran legislator Biman Banerjee served as Speaker of the Assembly.

Political significance beyond the Assembly

Beyond its procedural importance, Bose’s appointment is expected to strengthen the BJP’s political messaging in North Bengal, a region that has played a crucial role in the party’s rise in the state.

His election also comes at a time when the BJP is attempting to consolidate its administrative and organisational footprint after assuming power in West Bengal. For the BJP, the Speaker’s chair now represents more than just a constitutional office, it signals a shift in the state’s political geography.
