Chinese President Xi Jinping invoked an ancient Greek conflict during his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Beijing this week, drawing attention to the idea known as the "Thucydides Trap".

What is 'Thucydides Trap'?

The phrase comes from the writings of ancient Greek historian Thucydides, who documented the Peloponnesian War fought between Athens and Sparta in 431 BC. The theory suggests that when a rising power challenges an established global power, tensions often increase and may eventually lead to war.

"It was the rise of Athens and the fear that this instilled in Sparta that made war inevitable," Thucydides wrote in his book, History of the Peloponnesian War.

During his opening remarks, Xi referred directly to the concept while speaking about the future of US-China relations.

“Can China and the United States transcend the so-called ‘Thucydides Trap’ and forge a new paradigm for major-power relations?” Xi asked, per a report by The Guardian.

The reference is widely seen as a warning against growing rivalry between Beijing and Washington as China expands its economic, military and geopolitical influence.

Why Xi mentioned it during Trump talks

Xi’s remarks came at a time of rising tensions between the two countries over Taiwan, trade and global security issues.

Later in the meeting, Xi reportedly warned Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could push both countries towards conflict.

“The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-US relations,” Xi said.

“If mishandled, the two nations could collide or even come into conflict, pushing the entire China-US relationship into a highly perilous situation,” he added.

Despite the warning, Xi later adopted a softer tone during a state banquet, saying cooperation between the two nations remained possible.

“Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can totally go hand in hand … and advance the wellbeing of the whole world,” Xi said.

Trump later responded on social media, claiming Xi had “very elegantly referred to the United States as perhaps being a declining nation”.

“Two years ago, we were, in fact, a Nation in decline,” Trump wrote. “Now, the United States is the hottest Nation anywhere in the world, and hopefully our relationship with China will be stronger and better than ever before!”
