The annual competition is open to young students across UPU member countries and is aimed at encouraging writing, expression and reflection through the format of a personal letter.
Theme for 2026
The theme for this year’s competition asks students to write a letter to a friend explaining why human connection matters in a digital world. The topic highlights the growing dependence on digital communication and invites students to reflect on personal relationships, emotions and real-world bonds.
CBSE noted that the competition focuses on writing skills as well as clarity of thought and expression.
How the competition works internationally
The International Bureau of the Universal Postal Union coordinates the contest globally. Each participating country selects one national entry, which is then submitted for international evaluation.
Three international winners are chosen by the UPU and awarded gold, silver and bronze medals along with certificates and prizes. Special mention certificates are also awarded. The Gold Medal winner may be invited to visit the UPU headquarters in Berne, Switzerland, or receive an alternative prize, subject to UPU’s decision.
Selection process in India
In India, the Department of Posts will conduct the competition at Circle and National levels. The top three entries at each level will receive cash prizes and certificates.

Language options and school coordination
Students may write their entries in English or in any language listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
CBSE has asked schools to coordinate with designated Nodal Officers from their respective postal circles or regions while conducting the competition. Details of the Nodal Officers will be shared separately and will also be available on the India Post website.
