Delhi-based Class 12 student Vedant Shrivastava has received support online after CBSE acknowledged a technical error in its new On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.

The student had earlier claimed that the Physics answer sheet uploaded under his roll number did not belong to him, triggering social media backlash and accusations against him.

CBSE admits technical error in OSM system

The controversy began after Vedant Shrivastava pointed out discrepancies in the scanned copy of his Physics answer sheet uploaded by CBSE. According to reports, the answer sheet available under his roll number appeared to belong to another student.

Following public attention and growing discussion around the issue, CBSE reviewed the matter and admitted that an incorrectly scanned copy had been uploaded because of a technical problem in the board’s On-Screen Marking system.

In its response, the board said, “Thank you for bringing your concern regarding your Physics answer book to our attention. Upon review, the matter has been examined, and the correct copy of your answer book has been sent to your registered email address”, according to Hindustan Times.

CBSE further added that “Necessary action for updating your result, as applicable, is also being undertaken accordingly.”

The student faced trolling online

Before the board acknowledged the mistake, Vedant reportedly faced criticism and trolling online for questioning the evaluation process. Some social media users even labelled him “Pakistani” after he raised concerns about the uploaded answer sheet.

After CBSE admitted the error, Vedant’s brother Siddhant reacted strongly to the trolling. Sharing a celebratory moment with Rajma Chawal, he wrote, “We are not Pakistani”, as per Hindustan Times.

The incident has sparked wider conversations around the functioning of CBSE’s new digital evaluation process and the pressure students face while raising concerns publicly.

Questions raised over digital evaluation process

The OSM system was introduced by CBSE this year as part of efforts to digitise evaluation and improve transparency in post-result procedures. The board had said the system would help minimise human error and simplify access to answer sheets during re-evaluation.

However, Vedant’s case prompted several students on social media to claim that they too had noticed irregularities in uploaded answer scripts. The episode has now led to closer scrutiny of the digital marking system and how answer sheets are processed and uploaded online.
