The University of Delhi has announced that it will begin accepting Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores for admission to its M.Tech programme in Microwave and Communication Engineering from the 2026 academic session. This marks the first time the university will use GATE scores for admission to a postgraduate degree programme, per a report by NDTV.

What caused the change

The move comes after the programme received approval from the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Previously, Delhi University had used GATE scores only for admissions to PhD programmes.

According to the university notification, candidates holding a valid GATE score will be given first preference during the admission process. If seats remain vacant after admissions through GATE, candidates will then be considered on the basis of CUET-PG 2026 merit, per NDTV report.

Haneet Gandhi, Dean of Admissions at Delhi University, was quoted as saying by NDTV that this is the first instance of the university introducing GATE-based admissions for a postgraduate course. He clarified that the M.Tech programme itself is not new, but the admission process has been revised following AICTE approval.

More details about the eligibility criteria

Per NDTV, the notification further stated that category-wise merit lists will be prepared using valid GATE scores. Any vacant seats remaining after the GATE-based admission process will later be filled through CUET-PG candidates within their respective categories.

To apply for the M.Tech programme, candidates must hold a B.Tech, BE, BSc Engineering, MSc, or an equivalent degree in a relevant discipline from a recognised university or institution.

The eligible disciplines include Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, and Radio Physics and Electronics Engineering.

Delhi University has announced a total intake of 30 seats for the programme. Of these, 13 seats are unreserved, eight seats are reserved for OBC candidates, four for SC candidates, two for ST candidates, and three for candidates under the EWS category.

The university has also clarified that admissions to the M.Tech programme will not be conducted through the Common Seat Allocation System for Postgraduate Admissions (CSAS-PG). Instead, a separate admission portal dedicated to M.Tech admissions in Microwave and Communication Engineering will be launched. Candidates will be able to apply through this portal once the admission process officially begins.
