Australia have been dealt a major blow ahead of the ODI series against Pakistan after captain Mitchell Marsh was ruled out with an ankle injury. Cricket Australia confirmed that the all-rounder will stay back in Perth for rehabilitation and further medical assessment, leaving the visitors without one of their most experienced white-ball players.
Australia’s injury concerns grow
Marsh’s absence adds to Australia’s selection troubles for the Pakistan tour. Several senior players, including Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Travis Head, are already unavailable due to workload management and IPL commitments. The injury now forces Australia to field a relatively inexperienced squad for the three-match ODI series.

Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis is expected to take over captaincy duties in Marsh’s absence. The selectors are also likely to hand opportunities to younger players as Australia look to test their bench strength ahead of future ICC tournaments.

Cricket Australia has not yet announced a replacement for Marsh. The board stated that the medical staff will continue monitoring his recovery before taking a call on his availability for the Bangladesh white-ball series next month.
Big setback before Pakistan ODIs
Mitchell Marsh has been a key figure in Australia’s ODI setup because of his aggressive batting and ability to contribute with the ball. His absence leaves a significant gap in the middle order and reduces the side’s overall balance heading into an important overseas assignment.

The injury is another setback in Marsh’s career, which has often been interrupted by fitness issues. The all-rounder has previously dealt with ankle, hamstring and hip injuries that forced him to miss several international matches.
Pakistan and Australia are scheduled to begin the ODI series on May 30 in Rawalpindi, with the remaining matches set to be played in Lahore. Despite the absence of several star players, the series is expected to provide both teams with an opportunity to test combinations ahead of major white-ball tournaments in the coming years.
